September 11th, 2008

It has been a while since I got to post any updates on how things are going. Given that it is Sept 11th and introspection as well as retrospection is a given on a day like today, I can only see it fitting.

Life as a dad is like nothing else, indescribable. I can't imagine my life the way it was before, and I wouldn't go back either. She is fantastic.

In music news, Mike Rau and I have been doing some more recording for our labour of love CD that is taking forever to make, but it's still coming along. We have been doing many acoustic shows as of late as well, particularly at The Boiler Room in Wethersfield, though the fate if that gig has yet to be determined. The coming weeks will be key in figuring out if that will remain a steady thing or not.

Mayocks shows are going fantastic as well, the band has gelled into a really tight live act, and fans have really enjoyed our new incarnation and new found energy. Regular shows are forthcoming, though we lost our regular run at O'Driscolls Irish Pub in Wilbraham Mass, due to it's abrubt closing. Bummer.

I am off to Nantucket this weekend for my last run of Spookie Daly Pride shows at the Chicken Box for the year. It has been really fun this summer and I can say that each time has been a totally different experience, which keeps it feeling fresh. I unfortunately have to miss playing the Wormtown Festival, but I have learned a long time ago that it is impossible to be everywhere at once.

The coming months will be interesting as things play out. I'm sure more Mayocks, SDP, and acoustic shows will pop up, and who knows, maybe the occasional Shortness show, though they seem to be harder to come by as we all get older and busier. Mike Rau and I are hammering down in the studio to finish up our long overdue projec (we started it in 2006!) Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming events, and a possible REALLY BIG event somewhere in the vicinity of Thanksgiving that would be most exciting to say the least. See you out there! Dennis

See you soon,
Dennis

July 17th, 2008

In the midst of all that has been going on, I have decided to upload one of the songs that Mike Rau and I have recorded for our upcoming CD on my Myspace page, just to prove that we are indeed doing something and that it WILL come out at some point. It's called "Nothing Left to Lose" and it's one of our proudest moments on the record. You may have heard Dr. Juice perform this song once or twice in it's early stages a long time ago, but like so many others it got lost in all the muck. There have been many things added to the arrangement and it differs greatly from the early prototypes. Mike wrote this song, sang the vocals as well as the drum programming, and I did the guitars, bass, and general arrangement of parts. All in my little home studio I call "The Cave".

If you would like to hear this song, you can click the "Music" link on the front page, or you can click   here!

See you soon,
Dennis

Welcome to the world Sara-Jean Rose Fancher! Born on July 4th, 2008, 7 lbs 4 oz. She is beautiful and I really don't have any words to describe how I feel right now. I am just as proud a father as you will ever see.

See you soon,

June 2008

Yep, it's June already. It's gone fast. I have about four weeks before I am a dad, and things have been pretty busy. Lots of shows with the Mayocks, Spookie Daly Pride, and 5 Gallon Bucket coming up. Mike Rau and I are also STILL recording our CD, vocals are just very time consuming and we only get about one day a week to work on them, so it's taking some time.

I will be gigging steady thru June, and then taking a break to deal with all things parenthood, getting used to what will need to be done on an hourly basis with our baby girl....yep, it's a girl. I will resume playing again in the later part of July, including Camp Creek with Allshouse's House once again, and guesting with Flipper Dave as well, unless some unforseen things happen to keep me from going. Very much looking forward to what this summer has to offer. Life change is a good thing.

See you soon,
Dennis

March 2008

Sorry I haven't updated this page in a while. Just keeping busy gigging, working, preparing for my pending fatherhood, etc. I found out that I am having a daughter which makes me very happy. I have this idea that it's not so likely that she would want to follow in my footsteps the way a son would, the way I followed in my own father's footsteps in the music business. Then again, if she does, she would have a much better chance than I ever did at doing anything meaningful and successful with it, so who knows? Speculation is really fruitless at this point in time.

In music news, I have been busy with the Mayocks preparing new material for future live shows and a down-the-road new Mayocks album, which is still in the early planning stages at the moment. Some acoustic dous with Mike Rau are also coming up, check the gigs page. I also will be hitting the road in May with Spookie Daly Pride again, which should be a blast. The odd Shortness and Spaghetti Cake gig will pepper the calendar as well. Overall I feel I am working just the right amount without the side effect of burnout.

Listening wise, I am enjoying a wide variety of music, such as Donald Fagen's recent solo album "Morph the Cat", a bunch of different Wayne Krantz records, and discovering that I really like Todd Rundgren even if I didn't know it. There is really nothing like a masterfully crafted song, and that guy had a bunch.

See you soon,
Dennis

January 2008

Well another year has come and gone like a train. With the new year comes change, and the past two years have been all about change for me. In review, so much has happened: I got married; my band of six years broke up; I bought a new house with my wife; I finally got the Spookie Daly Pride gig I wanted four years ago; and I have fallen back into my sideman role as a guitar player. I ended off the year by joining the Mayocks in their rotating guitar slot, and learning about my pending fatherhood. It is really a miracle I can even recognize myself in the morning.

If I dare make any predictions of the coming year, I do so hesitantly, knowing full well that life can change course at a moments notice. Still I am hopefull of the following: Mike Rau and I will complete our long awaited CD by summertime; I will continue to play with the Mayocks and Spookie Daly Pride as long as possible; and my child will be a blessing of health and hope. Somewhere in all that, the odd Shortness and Spaghetti Cake shows will pop up as well. These are the things I would like to count on in my 34th year on this planet.

It is a combination, in equal parts, of curiosity, sheer terror, and blind optimism that I move forward into 2008. If I can say anything, it's that it's been intersting for sure.
See you soon,
Dennis
